Huawei as just announced a successor to its VR headset at CES 2018 simply called the VR 2. But while it may look like a simple successor, the Huawei VR 2 is actually the first VR headset that’s IMAX-certified.
This means that you can enjoy IMAX-certified films right on the headset and view them the same way you’d experience watching a movie inside an IMAX theater.
This is possible thanks to two displays that feature 1600-by-1400 pixels of resolution running at 90 Hz. The Huawei VR 2 is also said to come with a custom-made controller just like Google’s Daydream View headset.
The Huawei VR 2 also uses USB-C connectivity and is fully compatible not just with smartphones, but also with other devices like notebooks, PCs and tablets.
Huawei also mentioned that the IMAX-certification means that it is now working with the company along with DTS (those sound guys) to deliver a full immersive IMAX 3D experience.
It is likely that the Huawei VR 2 will initially release in China first, but seeing as the IMAX branding can be a big draw to consumers, I won’t be surprised if it starts shipping globally soon.
