Yes, flying cars in Dubai – because why not.

A recent announcement by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the Chinese EHANG Company confirmed that a new type of autonomous aerial vehicle (AAV) capable of bringing a human is now being tested which we could see flying alongside the skyscrapers of Dubai as early as this July.

The vehicle, named EHANG184, will include a touchscreen giving information to the passenger on all the possible destinations that the passenger can visit. From there it can map out a course where it will take off and land at specially designated places.

HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA said that the trial would definitely help Dubai to be one of the smartest cities in the world, while emphasizing RTA’s endeavours in providing and improving public transport.

The AAV is able to fly a maximum of 30 minutes with a cruising speed of up to 160 kph plus a cruising altitude of 3,000 feet. Additionally, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority has given the permit to commence with the trail and local telecom operator Etisalat provided its own 4G network that will be used to communication purposes between the AAV and the control center.
