Sophia just became the first robot to have Saudi citizenship
October 29, 2017

Announcement made during the Future Investment Initiative.

Saudi Arabia has just granted citizenship to a female robot, making it the first non-human to receive such a distinction. The announcement was made during the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, where Sophia (the robot’s name) thanked the crowd for the recognition.

“I am very honored and proud for this unique distinction. This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship,” she said on stage while accepting her citizenship.

The robot was developed by Hanson Robotics, and it was recently sighted at the Etisalat stand during GITEX Technology Week. From the images, she mostly resembles human-like qualities like porcelain skin and what its creators say as an ‘intriguing smile’.

The sophisticated AI behind Sophia is something out of a science fiction movie though its makers are saying that she’s still a robot, meaning that she won’t have the same human emotions. Still, that wouldn’t stop everyone from thinking about Terminators and the like.
