Turns out you can spend less time on your smartphone if it’s on a different color.
You may not notice it, but smartphone addiction is a real and common problem for nearly everyone who uses one. But Tristan Harris, who previously worked at Google is now advocating about the dangers of smartphone addiction, comparing it to a slot machine.
He explained that most of the time, you still spend time looking at your smartphone even when there is nothing interesting or even if you don’t have any notifications. There is a certain feeling of contentment when you’re checking the smartphone – a feeling someone has when they’re addicted to something.
But like other types of addiction, there’s actually one simple solution to combat it: grayscale. Harris said that simply turning off the color in your smartphone makes less appealing to look at. It could probably not cure the addiction completely, but he says there’s a good chance you’d start looking at it less when it’s not colored.
Thankfully, iOS and Android devices already have built-in settings that instantly turn your smartphone’s display into grayscale. It’s usually placed inside the Accessibility settings of any device and you can turn it on with ease.
Now it’s up to you if you can actually kick that habit of being addicted to your smartphone.
We’re doing it now ourselves, but give it a try and tell us what you think.
