After a couple of delays, Apple has finally launched the AirPods as part of the new line of accessories made for their new generation of devices – specifically for the iPhone 7, which finally got rid of the 3.5 mm audio jack.
The AirPods are basically Apple’s own EarPods with the wires cut off – and both share very similar design and dimensions. It’s small and light, which means that wearing them for a long time won’t be an issue.
The AirPods are enclosed in small compartment that looks like dental floss (it was actually mistaken as one at one point in our office) that also charges the AirPods. We’ll take about battery life in the latter part of the reiew.
I initially had concerns about the AirPods falling off inside my ear when I first saw them but to my surprise, the fit was great and I’ve even used them while doing my morning jog and it stayed firmly in place. It all comes down to how it fits your ear – if it fits perfectly, then rest assured that it won’t fall off easily when you are using them. So I’d advise that you check out the AirPods for yourself and try them out before purchasing them.
The AirPods have sensors present that can detect if you are wearing them so it can automatically pause music when you take them and play it again when you put it back on. The microphones are located at the bottom, and even a double tap on one ear piece can bring up Siri.
All of these smart features is made possible by Apple’s custom W1 chip, which easily makes it one of the easiest wireless devices to pair. In fact, you simply open the charging case and place it next to your iPhone where a pop up will ask you to pair them. After pressing connect, the AirPods will now automatically pair not only to your device, but all devices that use the same iCloud account.
Sound quality on the AirPods wouldn’t wow you – but it is still better than most wireless headsets available. Mids and highs are clear, and bass is just sufficient for me to enjoy low frequency effects. Stereo separation is present and it’s a better performer than the wired Lightning EarPods by a decent margin.
The good thing about the AirPods is that you can even use just one AirPod at a time or use them both to your liking. As long as Bluetooth is turned on, sound will be automatically directed to your device.
Using Siri is possible with the AirPods – though I never really used it in public. The good thing is that the AirPods can also be paired easily with any Bluetooth-enabled device, even if it runs on Android.
The AirPods can give you about 5 hours of battery life on continuous usage, but the charging case (which charges using a Lightning cable) can provide an additional 24 hours of battery life. Everytime you place the AirPods in the case, it will automatically start charging so you wouldn’t worry so much on battery life.
The smart features of the AirPods is what makes it unique, but there is still room for improvement especially with the sound quality. Not that it’s bad, but it’s small size is what limits its performance.
The Apple AirPods is a great wireless accessory to your iOS device. Is it good? Yes. Is it perfect? Not exactly. But the headphone’s exclusive integration with the Apple ecosystem makes it a top choice for users of the platform.
