Probably the one accessory you should always have.
Tile is one of the few tracking gadgets that you usually find on shops that you think isn’t important until you actually get to use it. Like the name, it’s a small square-shaped device that helps you find your keys or wallet or whatever device you pair it with.
It’s a simple solution if you’re the forgetful kind. Simply attach a Tile on your car keys or inside your wallet and using an app on your smartphone, locate it and give it a ring. A subtle ring will easily let you know where it is place.
The Tile primary connects through Bluetooth to track its location and show it on a map. But unlike similar products where it only relies on your smartphone’s Bluetooth connection for the location, the Tile is able to connect to other Tile users that would help it update its location and at some instances, be able to chime and ring for you to find.
We’ve been testing two models: the Tile Mate and the Tile Slim. The Tile Mate is about 1 mm thick and includes a keyhole that you can easily put alongside your keys along while the Tile Slim is thinner at 2.4 mm and can easily into wallets or a passport holder.
The Tile’s battery isn’t user replaceable – which could be a disadvantage for some. The battery is promised to last for up to a year, and after that you’re entitled to purchase replacement tiles (reTile as they call it) at a discounted price. So if you’re a regular user of the tile, then you may have to set aside some money for the eventual replacements.
A single Tile Mate costs 129 AED, while a 4-pack is at 349 AED. A single Tile Slim will set you back 135 AED while the 4-pack will cost 345 AED. There is also a combo pack of two Tile Mates and two Tile Slims selling for 345 AED.
Once you download the Tile app on your mobile device (it works on iOS and Android) then pairing happens without a glitch. The Tiles emit a soft jingle that should be audible enough for you to hear. The problem is if the Tile Slim is placed in your wallet, the sound output decreases and there is a good chance that you won’t hear it especially in a noisy environment.
But that’s not just what the app is for. Since you’re given a location, you can still easily find it if it is within range. It also works both ways – meaning that if you’re looking for your smartphone, you can press the Tile and it will emit a sound from your smartphone so you can find it.
I see the Tile Mate and the Tile Slim as suitable companion for someone who always misplaces stuff, or probably even someone who is traveling. Despite its flaws, the Tile Mate and Tile Slim are simple accessories that turn out to provide a lot of benefits.
