The month of September onwards is usually a busy month for Blu-ray releases. From special editions to collector’s set, it is the perfect time for companies to splurge consumers into getting the best edition of their favorite movies on Blu-ray.
As a Blu-ray collector myself, I am always on the lookout for new releases I can add to my collection. It can be in the form of a standard release or a massive special edition that has a high collector’s value. Check out these Blu-ray releases I currently have my eyes on:
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Electro Collector’s Edition)
I wasn’t really a fan of the rebooted Spider-Man movies, but it does have its moments. I was fairly amused by the sequel and would easily watch it again on Blu-ray. The Electro Collector’s Edition of the movie comes with the 2D and 3D version of the film along with a DVD of the movie all housed in a special case that resembles Electro’s head. The details look great on the figure, I just hope I don’t get electrocuted.
Currently available on Amazon for $104.99.
The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season
I absolutely loved the fourth season of The Walking Dead and while we are still a few months away from the October 12th premiere of Season 5, why not relive some zombie horrors with this special edition of the Blu-ray release? This 5-disc Blu-ray set of the fourth season is housed in an awesome ‘Walker’ case design by McFarlane Toys. It looks so real it might just bite you. Just kidding.
Currently available on Amazon for $79.99.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The Winter Soldier may be one of the best Marvel movies I have seen. It perfectly mashed a great story and superb action while taking good care of certain plot points only Marvel fans would notice. The upcoming Blu-ray release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier will include the 3D and 2D versions of the movie, along with a DVD and a digital iTunes copy. I can enjoy re-watching this film for now until Guardians of the Galaxy comes out on video and before Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters next year.
Due to be released on September 9th for $27.99.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Complete First Season
This TV series was set to continue side stories that can’t fit on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and while it didn’t really start on a high note, the subtle hints and Easter eggs to various Marvel characters made it a joy to watch. The 5-disc set also includes various featurettes and interviews with the cast and crew that go deeper into the Marvel universe.
Due to be released on September 9th for $44.99.
Star Trek: The Compendium
If you already own the first two parts of the rebooted Star Trek franchise directed by Star Wars Episode VII helmer J.J. Abrams on Blu-ray then you can give this a pass. It is basically a repackaging of the first two movies on four discs that includes all the previously released special features. Now you ask why it is on my list, well it is the only version where you can view the IMAX version Star Trek: Into Darkness. If you are not aware, part of the movie was shot on IMAX, so the inclusion of the IMAX footage is something fans have been eager to see on Blu-ray after it was released.
Due to be released on September 9th for $33.99.
Godzilla was one of my favorite movies this year and it’s impossible not to have it on my collection. There are currently two special editions of Godzilla that I have my eye on: one that comes in a standard steelbook packaging that includes a small button and when you press it, you will hear Godzilla’s ear-piercing roar. Another edition is from Germany that includes the movie in a steelbook case, along with a figure of the famous beast. You can either choose which edition is best, or like me, I might just get the two.
Due to be released on September 9th for $33.99 (Steelbook) or get the German edition with figurine here (price not yet available).
Transformers: Age of Extinction
The fourth Transformers movie wasn’t the really the best out of the series, but I generally enjoyed the action scenes. I was originally going to by the standard release of the movie and then I saw this beauty. The Limited Edition Gift Set includes a replica of Optimus Prime riding the Dinobot Grimlock and will present the movie in its IMAX-enhanced format. Autobots, rollout!
Due to be released on September 30th for $79.99.
Alien Anthology (35h Anniversary Edition)
This classic film series has been released on Blu-ray before – and it is still considered to be one of the best Blu-rays to have come out. Now with the approaching 35th anniversary of the first movie, 20th Century Fox is once again releasing the Anthology boxset in a brand new packaging called the ‘Nostromo Special Edition’ and it has the same six discs present on the previous release. I’m a sucker for fancy packaging, but you can’t deny that boxset looks sweet.
Due to be released on October 7th. You can pre-order it for 42.99 Euros on Amazon.de.
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Another great X-Men movie deserves a great special edition. Aside from the 2D and 3D versions of the movie along with hours of interviews and behind the scenes footage, the special edition of X-Men: Days of Future Past comes with a replica of Magneto’s helmet. Now I just need to check if the helmet can fit my head. It’s an Amazon US exclusive, so make sure you’re getting it from there.
Due to be released on October 14th for $69.99.
Breaking Bad: The Complete Series
This particular ‘barrel’ edition of the awesome TV series was already released before but was subsequently discontinued. Now fans who weren’t able to buy the special edition can get their hands on this handsome collector’s set that does not just include all the episodes from the series, but also replicas and booklets that every Breaking Bad fan should own. Prepare to pay a hefty price though, because this set won’t be cheap.
Due to be released on October 28th for $209.99.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Extended Edition)
Every film in The Lord of the Rings and its prequel The Hobbit have gotten extended edition treatments with added footage and special features so it’s not a surprise that the second movie in The Hobbit trilogy will also come with an extended version. Aside from the additional 25 minutes of new material added into the film, it will also include hours of behind the scenes footage. This particular special edition includes a figure that recreates one of the memorable scenes from the movie.
Due to be released on November 4th for $89.96.
Caesar’s Warrior Collection (Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes)
The Planet of the Apes reboot was one of the few movies that was as good as the original. And what better way to celebrate the critical and commercial success of the movies than with a collector’s edition of the Blu-ray. This particular set called ‘Caesar’s Warrior Collection’, includes the first two movies: Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, all kept in a highly-detailed 12-inch head figurine of the movie’s heroine and also includes a 32-page booklet and ape character cards.
Due to be released later this year for $116.99.
Do you have any special editions that I may have missed? Share them with me below in the comments!
Note: Most of these discs are normally acquired from the US, and while the discs are not region locked (meaning it can played anywhere), there are instances when it is restricted only to US-based Blu-ray players. So make sure your player supports the disc before making your purchase.
