A bug is reportedly causing PS4s to crash
October 14, 2018

Don’t open suspicious messages.

Various PS4 users have started reporting that the messages they’ve received are crashing their consoles. The message seems to include various characters similar to the ones that have caused iOS devices to crash. At times, the PS4 could have real difficulty reading the message that only a factory reset can bring it back to working condition.

The recent bug was discovered after various users have started reporting receiving the message and opening it in their consoles. Sony hasn’t acknowledged the issue but there are some main preventions that you can do to avoid crashing your console:

  1. Avoid opening messages on your console (for now).
  2. If you need to open a message, install the PlayStation Messages app on your Android or iOS device and open (and delete) the malicious message from there.
  3. Set your privacy settings so that only close friends can send you messages.

Sony should be working on an update to fix the error soon – but for now, it’s better to keep yourself safe or you might risk losing progress on your games or worse, it could wipe out your console’s hard drive.
