Years after it launched, Pokémon Go is still profitable
January 13, 2020

Closes 2019 is its most successful year.

I was one of the first users of Pokémon Go when it first came out in 2016. The excitement of catching your own Pokémon lasted for a couple of months – until the excitement eventually wore off. The same thing happened with my friends that have started playing it as well and while some stayed on casually playing it, it looks like Pokémon Go is still profitable a couple of years later.

Based on the statistics released by Sensor Tower, Pokémon Go has earned an estimated $900 million during 2019 – that’s more than the earnings of some blockbuster movies. This proves that the game still has a lot of fans running around and catching virtual Pokémons. It’s earnings actually dipped after 2019 but came back strong in 2019, making it Niantic’s most profitable year.

It was mentioned that Pokémon Go started gaining more players again once the developers introduced new features like trading and improved AR support, especially with new operating system versions. This helped Pokémon Go reach the top five highest-earning mobile games in the world. The game just placed behind Candy Crush Saga which took $1.1 billion.

The statistics also revealed that 40 percent of the spending came from players in the United States, followed closely by Japan. This somehow proves that Pokémon Go still has enough steam to keep going for a couple more years.
