Women Rule: Top 10 Action Movies to Watch

March 8, 2020

Here’s our list of favorite women-led action films.

Today, March 8th marks International Women’s Day and as we celebrate the strong powerful women around us, we thought it’s best to round up some of the best action movies we’ve seen that had women in the leading role.

We chose action because it’s usually a genre dominated by men – but as you can see over the past couple of years, that is already changing. There are more than ten films that’s for sure, but here are some of our favorites:

Mad Max: Fury Road – It’s a Mad Max movie, but Tom Hardy shares the spotlight with its equally awesome co-star Charlize Theron, who plays Imperator Furiosa and easily became one of the best parts of the movie. Here’s hoping she still gets her own spin-off movie.

Wonder Woman – Led by a charismatic performance by Gal Gadot, it is one of the few good movies in the DC Extended Universe. We hope its sequel Wonder Woman 1984 will be equally good, if not better.

Captain Marvel – While it took years before Marvel Studios started doing female-led superhero films, we’re glad that they’ve started focusing more on these heroines.

Atomic Blonde – Charlize Theron again leads this great action epic from the director of John Wick, which is why expect the movie to be as awesome and brutal.

Kill Bill Volume I and II – Personally one of my favorite Tarantino movies, Kill Bill’s tribute to classic Japanese samurai movies brings Uma Thurman in a bloody action epic that brings lots of replay value.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Even if it was a spin-off, Rogue One is considered by many to be one of the best Star Wars movies thanks to a great performance by Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso.

Aliens – Alien was already a great movie, but the change in tone from horror to action in the sequel made Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley one of the most bad-ass characters ever shown on screen.

Black Panther – As with Fury Road, much of the action in this movie is credited to the female characters in the movie. From Shuri, Nakia and the Dora Milaje, Black Panther boasts one of the best portrayals of women we’ve seen on film.

Underworld – While the sequels were lackluster, the first Underworld movie introduced us to Kate Beckinsale’s Selene. The movie’s action-packed story was no sweat for the main character, who maintains her charisma and badassery with every scene.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – The movie’s story was made even more genuine with Zhang Ziyi’s portrayal of a thief who wanted to take a mythical sword for her own. The great action choreography kept us entertained from start to finish.

Are there any female-led movies you think should be on the list? Give it a shout out in the comments below!
