Wonder Woman: 10 Things You Need to Know Before Watching

May 30, 2017

Wonder Woman hits theaters this week.

One of the most famous DC superheroes, Wonder Woman, is finally heading to the big screen. Gal Gadot plays the titular role of Wonder Woman/Diana Prince in this newest adaption as part of the ‘DC Extended Universe that started with Man of Steel (2013), followed by Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Suicide Squad (2016).

But before you head out to theaters to check out the film, have a read through some of the interesting facts that you may not know about the movie.

1. Wonder Woman is the first female-led superhero movie to be directed by a woman. Patty Jenkins, who directed Charlize Theron in her Oscar-winning role in Monster, is taking the helm.

2. Various actresses have been considered to play Wonder Woman. This included Kate Beckinsale, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jessica Biel and Eva Green. Of course Gal Gadot, who was previously only known in her roles in the Fast and Furious movies, ultimately won the role.

3. Cobie Smulders from How I Met Your Mother was also considered to play the titular role. She eventually voiced the character of Wonder Woman in The Lego Movie and of course she now plays Agent Maria Hill in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

4. Original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter was supposed to have a cameo in the film, but scheduling conflicts prevented her from doing so. She did say she’s in full support of the movie, even joining Gal Gadot during the recent premiere in Los Angeles.

5. Gal Gadot was originally considered to play the villain Faora in Man of Steel  but the role ultimately went to Antje Traue. Guess that’s a blessing in disguise!

6. During some of the reshoots that needed to be done for the film, Gal Gadot was 5 months pregnant. With her baby bump visible, the crew designed a costume that included a green screen around her belly which was removed during post-production.

7. The role of Queen Hippolyta was initially offered to Nicole Kidman but she turned it down which ultimately went to Connie Nielsen. Kidman will instead play Queen Atlanta in next year’s Aquaman which of course is part of the DC Extended Universe.

8. It is reported that the Wonder Woman standalone movies will be a trilogy all while intertwining its story with the current DC Extended Universe. This was the same case that happened with Marvel’s Iron Man, Thor and Captain America trilogies.

9. Producer Zack Snyder who also directed Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice will have a cameo in the movie.

10. Wonder Woman will be back in theaters again in November for Justice League where she will join Batman, Aquaman, Cyborg, The Flash and Superman.
