Master quality recordings are now available for iOS users.
Any audiophile should already be familiar with Tidal. The music streaming service owned by Jay-Z is a popular alternative to Spotify and Apple Music. Even if competing platforms offer high-quality music, Tidal only streams lossless audio and high definition videos, which is the primary reason for its $19.99 (it’s most expensive tier) monthly subscription price.
You could complain about the price, but audiophiles loved the idea of streaming lossless audio that they can use with their expensive audio equipment. At the moment, Tidal has offered Master quality audio recordings on its desktop app but has now expanded for Android and iOS users as well.
This means that tracks streamed from your Tidal app will be completely hi-res. To compare, CDs have a sampling frequency of 16-bit/44.1 kHz so anything higher than that is considered hi-res audio. That being said, the higher the value, the bigger the file size. However, Tidal has utilized a new technology called MQA that allows the file to be compressed without compromising the audio quality.
You can check out Tidal’s service through their website or smartphone app, which includes a free trial.
