Top 10 Dolby Atmos Movies You Should Check Out

July 20, 2020

An essential part of your home theater.

You may have heard Dolby Atmos as one of the new surround sound technologies being promoted in cinemas and home theater systems and even with smartphones. Developed by Dolby Laboratories, Atmos is a new way to experience surround sound by offering extra channels on top of the current speaker setup.

You’ll notice this with cinemas equipped with Dolby Atmos technology – when you are inside, just look up and you will see a line of speakers pointed directly at you from the ceiling. For home theaters, new speakers that are either ceiling-mounted or come with upward-firing drivers now enable you to enjoy Dolby Atmos at home.

But having the right hardware is just part of the equation. You would need to have the right content to play Dolby Atmos. Thankfully, content is now accessible everywhere and is plentiful. From Netflix to digital downloads to Blu-ray discs, you have lots of ways to enjoy Dolby Atmos.

With that in mind, here’s a listing of some of our favorite Dolby Atmos movies that you should check out:

The Invisible Man – This thrilling movie showcases the capabilities of Dolby Atmos from quiet to loud scenes – from the sound of crickets in the night to the busy sound of cars on the road.

Be sure to check out: When the lead character is being stalked by the Invisible Man inside her house.

War of the Worlds (2005) – Steven Spielberg’s remake takes Atmos to another level. I remember our neighbors knocking after playing this movie.

Be sure to check out: When the aliens first attack in the first half of the movie.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – It may not be the best Star Wars movie, but it is definitely the best-looking and the best-sounding.

Be sure to check out: The final battle at the end.

1917 – One of the best war movies ever made, the movie uses Atmos technology to engulf you in battle, letting you hear bullets fly overhead and even explosions that make you feel like you’re actually there.

Be sure to check out: The climactic scene near the end.

John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum – Every John Wick movie sounds great in Atmos and Part 3 is no exception.

Be sure to check out: Nearly every part of the movie.

The Matrix – This sci-fi classic was remastered in 4K recently and now features a crazy Dolby Atmos that you have to hear to believe.

Be sure to check out: The building lobby shootout scene during the climax.

Terminator: Dark Fate – While it didn’t earn that much money in cinemas, Dark Fate is still one of the better Terminator sequels. The disc provides justice to the action scenes, letting you hear every explosion in glorious detail.

Be sure to check out: Sarah Connor’s arrival.

Avengers: Endgame – The biggest movie of all time is also one of the best-sounding Dolby Atmos movies.

Be sure to check out: The ‘Avengers Assemble!’ scene.

The Old Guard (Netflix) – Charlize Theron’s new action movie debuted on Netflix last weekend and features some of the best use of Dolby Atmos on any action film.

Be sure to check out: The opening action scene.
