How to Use iOS 14.5’s Unlock with Apple Watch feature

An easier way to unlock your device.

One of the new features introduced with iOS 14.5 along with watchOS 7.4 included the ability to unlock your iPhone with Face ID using your Apple Watch. This feature was introduced since it became a hassle to use Face ID at a time when everyone now wears masks regularly.

With your iPhone updated to iOS 14.5 and Apple Watch updated to watchOS 7.4, you can utilize the ‘Unlock with Apple Watch’ feature to easily unlock your iPhone without having to remove your mask.

Note that the following conditions must be met to turn on this feature:

  1. You have an iPhone with Face ID updated to iOS 14.5
  2. You have an Apple Watch Series 3 or later updated to watchOS 7.4
  3. You must be wearing the Apple Watch with wrist detection turned on and a passcode is enabled
  4. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be turned on on your iPhone

Open Settings and look for Face ID & Passcode.

After entering your device password, scroll down and look for the option that says Unlock with Apple Watch. Move the slider to turn it on, and wait until the process completes.

And you’re done! Whenever Face ID detects that you are wearing a mask, your Apple Watch will register haptic feedback to let you know that it was used to unlock your device.

As a safety measure, you can immediately lock your iPhone from your Apple Watch with the ‘Lock iPhone’ shortcut.
