Volkswagen have announced pre-orders on the new VW ID.3 all-electric city car. The first model to use VW’s new electric car platform, the ID.3 will begin a huge push by the automaker into electrification, with a goal of over 100,000 vehicles being delivered per year.
VW may have had the e-Golf and other pure-electric vehicles before, but the ID.3 will see the debut of the MEB platform, a custom architecture for electric vehicles which will underpin multiple models across all of VW Group’s brands.
And the number 3 is significant in two ways. On the one hand, it indicates the ID. as belonging to the compact segment, which is the class distinction in both internal and industry-wide classification systems. On the other, the ID.3 follows the Beetle and the Golf to introduce the third major chapter of strategic importance for the history of the brand.
After the ID.3, there’ll be other vehicles based on Volkswagen’s previously-shown electric concept cars. That includes the ID. CROZZ crossover, the ID. VIZZION sedan, and the ID. ROOMZ SUV. Each will get model numbers, VW says, the automaker using the numerics to indicate space above and below the ID.3 in its new line-up.
The brand vision is that while the Beetle once mobilized the masses, and the Golf as the class leader featured great innovations in each generation, the ID will make e-mobility accessible to a broad spectrum of customers.
