Panasonic MC-YL999: Drum roll please, this one’s a winner!

With the Extreme Series, Panasonic targeted a core target segment, namely larger homes, with the industry-first detachable drum vacuum cleaner series. Top of the series is the MC-YL999, with 2400W input power and 21L capacity.

In terms of a design approach, Panasonic opted for an industrial take on the category, as against going sleek and designerish like Dyson. Intriguingly, the end result is a rather great looking compact device with a focus on getting a job well done, even more so on the gold version which we are reviewing.

When using a vaccum cleaner, one key aspect one looks for is of course manuevarability, and I felt the MC-YL999 scores big on that front. The barrelish central compartment is nested in a unit with big rollers, which enable easy manueverability over regular obstacles one faces in the home whether stoppers or thick carpets.

Once in operation, as I found over the past few weeks, this is a seriously powerful device, able to take on challenging terrain across the home with nay a concern. The big rollers proved a huge advantage, not just in improving acesss, but also in manuevarability even when the drum was 3/4th full.  2400W input power means there’s a lot of suction power being generated, and the full capture nozzle on the MC-YL999 proved perfect for cleaning all sorts of surfaces, reaching awkward edges and corners. Plus, the chord is an 8 metre one, meaning you can reach almost every part of the home.

Once you feel the drum is full [mind you, 21L makes this a rather huge in capacity terms], a simple step on the docking pad releases the drum to be cleaned.  And at the end of a DIY cleaning session, when you want to set the device aside, I found the large cord rewind button a godsend, as it totally took out the standard issue with other vaccums post operation – messy, tangled cords.

This being Panasonic, a host of safety features are built-in, right from a rubber shield on the motor, which keeps sand and dust out, and a ground chain attached to the drum as a countermeasure for static electricity.  Another in-built aspect that reflects the brand’s attention to detail was that , the Extreme Vacuum Cleaners’ Anti-Bacterial filter includes copper in the fabric. This copper eliminates odor particles through chemical bonding to keep the filter clean while improving room air quality and free of pollutants.

All in all, the MC-YL999 drum vacuum cleaner scores big on many levels, right from convenience, features and manuevarability and sheer power. Indeed, a must have gadget for any large home.

The Panasonic MC-YL999 drum vacuum cleaner retails at AED 1,399
