Face it, smartwatches have become near synonymous with fads like 3D, courtesy consistently ordinary offerings in recent years. Which brings us to Casio’s Pro Trek WSD-F20A, a smart watch with a key USP – it’s built specifically for the outdoors. Tough watches that tackle the elements and triumph are, of course Casio’s key highlight. Running on Google’s Wear OS, the WSD-F20A thus promises useful outdoor features as well as the ability to see and interact with notifications from your phone. A key highlight is that there’s GPS on board, as also GLONASS and QZSS, another satellite system that will improve the tracking should your adventures take you to Australia, Japan, Singapore and other parts of the world. All covered, then.

In terms of first impressions, this is one big watch, not that we’re complaining. Bulky while avoiding being intrusive, its sturdy construction is a welcome benefit for something bound to take a beating while outdoors. This is MIL-STD-810G-certified, means you can not only cross a lake or three, you can take it for a swim thanks to its water-resistance of up to 50 meters. The watch’s companion polyurethane band is also comfortable and easy to clean – be it sweat, mud, rain, or whatever the outdoors throws at you.

Come to the 1.32” screen, and you have a reasonably good 320 × 300 pixel resolution. A key highlight, of course is the dual-layer LCD technology, which is essentially a color LCD screen, where you can access Wear OS and special Casio outdoor features, but with the choice of switching to the monochrome LCD, which only gives you the time and date and increases battery life.

In terms of physical controls, the Casio Pro Trek Smart WSD-F20 features three big side buttons on the right of the watch – Tool, Power and App. The Tool button on the top cycles through the watch’s compass, altimeter, and barometer, while the App button on the bottom brings up a map showing your location via its built-in GPS. The Power button doubles as the back button but also lets you access Wear OS applications. Press and hold it, and you will also be able to talk to the Google Assistant. You can use your voice and the watch will translate it into text, us or access the keyboard. Plus access to the Play Store on the watch means you don’t have to crowd your phone with Wear OS apps — they can simply be installed on the watch.

You can tailor the Pro Trek’s watch face to whichever activity you are doing. For instance, if ascending a particularly steep hike, the Altitude face would show information, calculating how much time there is to reach the summit. Or you can reduce the options to just directions, in which case the Traveler face give north, south, west, and east pointers to help keep you on track. The Journey watch face is an very intriguing one, as it displays a map of your current location behind an analog watch face, and through Google Calendar events, the face will also show a map to your next destination.

There is a list of pre-loaded activities you can track using the GPS and other sensors, including trekking, skiing, canoeing and cycling. The Pro Trek WSD-F20A comes with quite a few intriguing features that will appeal to the outdoor enthusiast. One feature we loved was the ability to mark and store places of interest by dropping pins, in the Location Memory feature.

Partly because this is great for logging excellent things you’ve come across while exploring but mainly because you can also assign an emoji, so you can remember all the smiley face places you’ve been. Then we have Moment Setter+, which lets you assign specific notifications and actions for different activities. For example, every time you’ve cycled 5km, you can get a map to pop up on screen showing your distance traveled. Or you can set the screen to display your current altitude when you stop during a trek. For those tackling endurance events you can even get the Pro Trek Smart to remind you to rehydrate or refuel every time you burn a set number of calories.
