ZTE and LG pull out of MWC 2020 amidst coronavirus concerns

February 5, 2020

But MWC 2020 is still a go.

Despite the organizer’s confirmation that Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020 will proceed as planned, it was reported that both ZTE and LG have decided to pull out of the show in response to the recent coronavirus threat.

ZTE was supposed to have a press event that would announce new devices and services, but the company decided to cancel their participation altogether. Part of the decision comes from the fact that some employees were already facing visa and travel delays to Barcelona.

LG, on the other hand, released a statement as to why they have decided to withdraw their participation at MWC. “LG Electronics is closely monitoring the situation related to the novel coronavirus outbreak,” a press statement said. “With the safety of its employees and the general public foremost in mind, LG has decided to withdraw from exhibiting and participating in MWC 2020 later this month in Barcelona, Spain. This decision will prevent needlessly exposing hundreds of LG employees to international travel, which most health experts have advised.” LG did say that it will instead hold local separate events in the future to announce its latest line of smartphones.

The GSM Association who are the organizers of MWC 2020 confirmed that while the show will go as planned, it has added preventive measures to make sure that attendees are safe. This includes the addition of various cleaning and disinfecting areas at the show along with increased medical support. The organizers were even suggesting a ‘no handshake policy’ during MWC 2020.

The good news is that T3ME will be at MWC 2020 to bring you the latest announcements and launches so stay tuned!

MWC 2020 will take place in Barcelona, Spain from February 24th to 27th, 2020.
