A clinic in Abu Dhabi that treats gaming addicts will open in 2020

November 11, 2019

The clinic will be opened by the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC).

A report by the Emirates News Agency (WAM) said that a new outpatient clinic for gaming addicts will be opened next year in Abu Dhabi. The clinic will be opened by the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC), which is the UAE’s leading rehabilitation body.

Serving to both Emiratis and expats in the country, the clinic aims to help anyone who suffers from gaming addiction, which is a type of behavioral issue. This was done in the wake of the recent announcement of the World Health Organization (WHO) to officially recognize gaming addiction in its International Classification of Diseases.

WHO defined gaming addiction with users showing impaired control over gaming. This means that someone who’s addicted to gaming will prioritize gaming over other activities. The NRC also revealed that mobile gaming remains extremely popular in the UAE not just with kids but also with adults.

At the moment, the clinic hasn’t had any patients checking in for rehabilitation. The aim is to let the community be aware of this problem so they can alert their own families.

The NRC has been offering treatment for various cases since 2002. This includes alcoholism, substance abuse and other behavioral addictions.
