Apple’s software and services business closes 2019 with a bang
January 8, 2020

2019 is the year that the Cupertino company has introduced a plethora of new services.

2019 turned out to be a profitable year for Apple. The company has just announced that its recent services that include Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Card helped push the Services offerings to the top. The continued success of the App Store, Apple Music, and iCloud also add to the historic success of the company. For 2020, Apple is committed to bringing a deeper integration of all its hardware and software.

“2019 was the biggest year for Services in Apple’s history. We introduced several exciting new experiences for our customers, all while setting the standard for user privacy and security,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “We begin the new decade with incredible momentum and gratitude to our customers who have shown such enthusiasm for all of our Services, and we continue to celebrate the work of the world’s best creators, storytellers, journalists, and developers.”

Here’s a rundown of their recent achievements:

The App Store now boasts half a billion visits every week and is now available in 155 countries. Launched in 2008, the App Store has now helped developers earn more than $155 billion with a quarter of those profits coming from 2019 alone. It was also noted that during the recent holidays, customers have spent $1.42 billion.

Apple Music continues to grow its user base and now streams more than 60 million songs on demand. Available in 115 countries, users loved the time-synched lyrics feature that debuted with iOS 13.

Apple TV+ is the company’s first venture into the world of streaming and has churned out some favorites like The Morning Show (my personal favorite), Dickinson, See, For All Mankind and Servant. It is the only streaming platform in history to receive multiple Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations in its launch year. The service is now available in more than 100 countries.

Teased earlier last year, the Apple TV app has now made its way to different platforms that include Smart TVs and other streaming devices. This allowed users to enjoy Apple Original content as well as a central hub for other streaming services with access to their own iTunes movie library.

Many had doubts about Apple Arcade before its launch, but once it became available it is clear that the $4.99 subscription is definitely worth it. Games like Sayonara Wild Hearts quickly captured gamers’ interests, with more games being added every month.

Apple Podcasts now gives you access to more than 800,00 shows in 155 countries. Apple News now draws more than 100 million monthly active users – though we’re still waiting for it to be available here in the UAE.

Apple Pay is now supported in nearly every store and restaurant in the UAE – even my local shawarma place accepts Apple Pay, which has been proven to be a viable alternative to contactless payments in the country.
