Absolutely transparent sound is the promise with Austrian Audio’s Hi-X65

May 18, 2021

A passion to create rather exquisitely engineered audio products is key to the Austrian Audio story. The company which started with key ex-AKG employees, made quite a mark with much acclaimed products like the OC818 microphones and headphones like the Hi-X55 over-ears. Now with the Hi-X65 over-ears, Austrian Audio is entering the open-back headphones market.

The Austrian Audio Hi-X65 over-ears are essentially open-back versions of the Hi-X55, with a key standout element being Austrian Audio’s Hi-X (High Excursion) technology to produce transparent sound. The Hi-X65’s also sport a 44mm driver, as well as a ring magnet system that includes the strongest magnetic field in its class and has been designed to improve airflow. This, combined with a copper-clad aluminium voice coil, reduces the weight of the membrane (and the voice coil connected to it), allowing it to move and change direction faster.

The Hi-X65 has been designed to be used for long listening (or, owing to their professional suitability, long mastering) sessions, with soft memory foam earpads and headband padding promising to provide plenty of space for the ears and prevent head pressure. The headphones feature a frequency response range of 5Hz to 28kHz, with a sensitivity of 11dBspl and impedance of 25 ohms.

The Hi-X65s come with 1.2m and 3m cables, while a secure locking mechanism keeps the 3.5mm jack cables stably hooked up to the headphones, and an adapter to quarter-inch stereo jack is included.

Austrian Audio’s Hi-X65 open-back headphone will retail at $419
