Sony officially announces the WH-1000XM4
August 9, 2020

The best just got better.

Just this weekend, Sony officially announced the release of the WH-1000XM4 after an ad for the headphone had leaked earlier last week. Not much has changed in terms of design, as Sony has opted to update the internals rather than the looks, which is a welcome move since we already loved the WH-1000XM3’s design.

The WH-1000XM4 again has an over-ear design with wireless noise-canceling that has been touted as one of the best. Each ear cup has two microphones that aid with noise-canceling, and feature Sony’s Dual Noise Sensor technology to capture ambient noise. From there, it will pass through the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 where a Bluetooth Audio SoC can adjust the music and noise at over 700 times per second. A new algorithm also applies noise canceling in real-time so you can enjoy your tunes without the background noise.

DSEE Extreme also uses Edge-AI that can analyze music so it can properly restore high range sounds that are normally lost when files are compressed. 360 Reality Audio is also present, and also includes a custom immersive musical field that is optimized for each user. You can make these configurations through the Sony | Headphones Connect app.

The WH-1000XM4 also has Adaptive Sound Control that can recognize locations you frequently visit and then adjusts the ambient sound so you can listen in peace. A new feature called Speak-to-Chat that allows the WH-1000XM4 to recognize your voice and automatically stop the music that’s playing and let ambient sound when you start speaking. Quick Attention mode is still present, where you can simply put your hand over the ear cup and the headphones will decrease the volume to let ambient noise in.

Additionally, the WH-1000XM4 can also be paired with two Bluetooth devices at the same time, and even lets you switch between two devices with a single tap. There’s also NFC so you can simply use it to pair with a compatible device. Battery life is rated up to 30 hours, and a quick charging function allows you to enjoy up to 5 hours of wireless playback from a 10-minute charge.

No word yet on official pricing, though Sony says that the WH-1000XM4 is scheduled for release this month. Available in Black and Platinum Silver, the headphones should probably come in the same price range when the WH-1000XM3 was first released – at around 1,499 AED.
