Believe it or not, Windows XP is still one of the most popular operating systems!
May 19, 2017

Mac OS X didn’t make the top 3.

We understand the frustrations of using a brand new OS – just like you, we always prefer something we’re always familiar with. But software isn’t meant to be stale, but is meant to evolve. That is why we always get updated and newer versions of it not just for the updated look but also to enjoy the updated security features.

Windows XP was released in 2001 – 16 years ago. Yet, the popularity of the operating system still resonates with most machines until today. Why? A recent report confirmed that Windows XP is still the third most used operating system in the world, with only Windows 7 and Windows 10 running in front of it. Apple’s Mac OS X sits at fifth place, eclipsed by Windows 8.1.

The statistics were provided by Net Applications, who confirmed that the out-of-date operating system is still running on a majority of computers globally.

Here is the complete list:

  • Windows 7 (48.5 %)
  • Windows 10 (26.28 %)
  • Windows XP (7.04 %)
  • Windows 8.1 (6.96 %)
  • Mac OS X 10.12 (3.21 %)

This might also be a factor why most computers around the world are easily hacked, and investigations conclude that most of them are due to outdate operating systems. The recent ‘WannaCry’ malware that affected millions of computers worldwide is good example of this – it became so serious that Microsoft has to issue an emergency patch for Windows XP even if it is no longer supported.
