CES 2015: Lenovo announces new ThinkPad X1 Carbon

January 5, 2015

To celebrate One Hundred Million ThinkPads, the hard keys are back!

For many years the definitive business machine, Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon has got a new release at CES 2015. The brand positions the new X1 Carbon as the world’s lightest 14” performance Ultrabook, coming in at 2.88 pounds. Plus it will come with the fifth-generation Intel Core i7 Broadwell processor.

jcrop-previewStandards like the 0.7” carbon-fiber chassis and the distinctive ThinkPad TrackPoint mouse remain, while the 2015 Carbon will also have options like a “super bright” display that can be either full HD or WQHD (2,560 x 1,440) and a PCIe solid-state drive that Lenovo says is 80% faster than standard SSDs. A distinct change on the peripheral side would be the clickable trackpad and the adaptive row of function buttons above the keyboard being taken out. These have been replaced by three buttons and the standard F1-F12 keys.

The X1 Carbon will start at $1249, boasts a new precision keyboard, a Carbon Fiber cover, a FHD or WQHD display option, 256GB and 512GB PCIe SSD drives and 4G LTE options with Intel’s 5th Gen Broadwell Core i7 processors underneath.

Besides the X1, Lenovo has also announced varied other laptops in the ThinkPad line, and the L, W and T will run on the 5th Generation Intel Core i processors.

jcrop-previewLenovo also introduced the Thinkpad Stack, a series of stackable add-ons that include a 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive, a wireless access point, a Bluetooth speaker and a power bank. All are detachable and with the pogo pin design can transfer data between them, too. Prices start at $49.99 for the power bank rising to $199.99 for the wireless access point and hard drive.

jcrop-previewLenovo also announced the 7.5mm thin ThinkVision X24 monitor. This has a pre-coated metal surface all across the monitor, and has a Neo Blade 23.8 inch IPS panel with a 178 degree viewing angle.

The X1 Carbon will retail at $1249 and will be available from January 2015, though we don’t have a release date here in the Middle East. Other models in the ThinkPad Porfolio like the ThinkPad T450s, T450, T550, E450, E550 and the L450 will start at $599 and will be available from February 2015.
