No iPhone for now.
As expected, Apple’s September ‘Time flies’ event focused on two of its products: the Apple Watch and the iPad. Notably absent is the iPhone, but there’s a good chance that it will have its event sometime next month. But enough of that – here’s everything that Apple has announced:
Apple Watch Series 6
The Apple Watch Series 6 keeps the same design, but now includes a new sensor that can now read blood oxygen levels plus an always-on Altimeter. It also comes in new colors including an awesome-looking blue and a Product Red variant. Series 6 uses the new S6 dual-core SoC that is 20 percent faster than the Series 5 and has an always-on display that’s twice as bright.
Series 6 will also debut with a new watch faces along with a selection of new bands including a Solo Loop and a Braided Solo Loop. The Series 6 will come pre-installed with watchOS 7.
The Apple Watch Series 6 comes in GPS and LTE versions starting at 1,599 AED and will be available this Friday.
Apple Watch SE
Also introduced is the Apple Watch SE, a cheaper variant that starts at 1,149 AED. It uses the S5 SoC and the same display as the Series 6 and will sport the basic Apple Watch features to track your workouts and daily activities.
The Apple Watch SE comes in GPS and LTE versions starting at 1,149 AED and will be available this Friday.
Family Setup is a new feature coming to all Apple Watch devices running watchOS 7. This will allow users without an iPhone to use an Apple Watch that can be set up by a family member.
Apple is also debuting a paid workout service called Apple Fitness+, where you can take advantage of custom workouts made to work with the Apple Watch. It will come with the most popular workout types including Cycling, Treadmill, Rowing, HIIT, Strength, Yoga, Dance, Core, and Mindful Cooldown. It will launch initially in a few countries, so hopefully we get it in the UAE soon.
Also confirming earlier rumors is Apple’s all in one subscription plan called Apple One that will bundle most of its paid services under one bundle. This includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple Arcade.
Here in the UAE, you can get an Apple Individual Plan that includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 50GB of iCloud storage for AED 39.95 per month or get the Family Plan that Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 200GB of iCloud storage for AED 52.95 per month, and can be shared among up to six family members.
iPad (8th Generation)
The entry-level iPad has also been updated with a faster A12 Bionic processor. It still uses the same 10.2-inch display and is compatible with the Smart Keyboard and first-generation Apple Pencil.
The iPad (8th Generation) comes in Wi-Fi and LTE versions starting at 1,349 AED and will be available this Friday.
iPad Air (4th Generation)
The new iPad Air probably got the beefiest upgrade. It comes with a new all-screen display similar to the iPad Pro, and now uses the new A14 Bionic chip which will also likely power the next iPhone.
You’re getting a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina Display and a USB-C port along with an aluminum chassis that comes in a range of different colors, including rose gold, sky blue, and green. It’s also compatible with the iPad Pro’s accessories that include the Magic Keyboard and the second-generation Apple Pencil.
But unlike the iPad Pro, the iPad Air lacks Face ID – but instead uses Touch ID that’s hidden on top of the power button. This could also be an indication that the next iPhone could also sport the same sensor and bring back Touch ID.
The iPad Air also comes in Wi-Fi and LTE versions and will be available next month starting from 2,499 AED.
Before concluding the event, Apple also said that the new software updates that include iOS 14, iPad OS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS will start rolling out to users from tomorrow, September 16th.
