Apple’s “Far Out” Event: Here’s everything that was announced

September 7, 2022

From the iPhone 14 to the Apple Watch Ultra.

Apple’s September keynote kicks off a plethora of new products scheduled for launch next week. Today’s keynote focused on three Apple device line-ups: Apple Watch, AirPods and, of course, the iPhone.

Apple revealed three new models of the Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2ndGeneration), and the Apple Watch Ultra.

The Apple Watch Series 8 mainly retains the design and overall look of the Series 7 from last year, including the Always-On display, a rugged case, and glass that’s crack, dust, and water resistant. It introduces a new temperature sensor specially made for women’s health, which can effectively monitor ovulation cycles and give estimates and cycle deviations. There’s also a new crash detection feature that uses internal sensors and software algorithms to automatically alert emergency services and your contacts if they have detected a crash. A new low-power mode will also be introduced, supporting earlier models of the Apple Watch starting from Series 4 and later.

But the highlight of the line-up is the Apple Watch Ultra, bringing the best of what a smartwatch can do. Made for rugged use, it comes with many technologies, including dual-frequency GPS, up to 36 hours of battery life, and built-in cellular, all inside a robust titanium case. It also features a new customizable action button and a more prominent speaker on the other side. It’s the ultimate sports watch for athletes and extreme sports lovers.

Not much has changed on the Apple Watch SE, but it did get a price drop and now features a faster dual-core processor and the same crash detection feature.

The second generation AirPods Pro was also revealed, now powered by an H2 chip with improved audio performance, battery life and active noise cancelation. It even supports precision finding using ultra-wideband technology with the Find My app. Aside from wired charging via the Lightning port, it can also charge using wireless Qi chargers, the Apple Watch charger, or a MagSafe charger.

The iPhone 14 comes in two models: the iPhone 14 with a standard 6.1-inch display and the iPhone 14 Plus with a 6.7-inch display. It’s almost the same design and features as the iPhone 13 and even uses the same A15 Bionic chip from last year. It isn’t a significant upgrade, but Apple says that the iPhone 14 Plus will have the best battery life ever on an iPhone.

The Pro models will also have the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes, made from surgical-grade stainless steel. The infamous notch has now been replaced by a pill-shaped hole that Apple calls “Dynamic Island.” It is dynamic in that it constantly changes and adapts depending on what alert is there or what app is used. It runs on the new A16 Bionic chip and now features a revamped Pro camera system that includes a new 48MP main camera. One exciting feature of the iPhone 14 series is its ability to connect to satellites for use in emergencies.

All of Apple’s new devices will go on pre-order this weekend and launch by mid-September.
