What to expect at Apple’s ‘Time Flies’ event
September 14, 2020

Reports say that a new iPhone isn’t part of the announcement.

Last week, Apple has sent out invites for a special event. The invite came with one tagline, ‘Time Flies’, which could give us an idea as to what the Cupertino company is planning to announce. Just like WWDC last June, Apple’s September event will be virtual and if WWDC is any indication, it looks like it’s going to be another fun keynote.

But what exactly can we expect for tomorrow’s Apple event? Here are a few predictions:

Apple Watch Series 6

A takeaway from the event tagline ‘Time Flies’, we should be getting a new Apple Watch tomorrow. Now on Series 6, the new Apple Watch may still retain the same design as the Series 5, but will most likely have a new tracking metric though the addition of a blood oxygen sensor and add to the sleep tracking support that will debut as part of watchOS 7. Rumors also said that a new color will be debuting with the new Apple Watch Series 6.

Apple Watch SE

While not entirely confirmed, a cheaper Apple Watch SE could also be announced and could have a similar design to the Apple Watch Series 3. It will of course have lesser features than the flagship Series 6, but you can still expect the same accurate health tracking metrics the Apple Watch has been known for.

iPad Air

It’s been more than a year since the iPad Air was updated, which is likely that Apple will be announcing a new generation. This time, leaks pointed out that the iPad Air will now have the same all-screen display as the iPad Pro, but will still retain Touch ID that’s now placed on the power button. It will be priced lesser than the iPad Pro and a little more than the base iPad model, giving you a midrange option if you don’t want to spend much.

Software Galore

Introduced last June during WWDC, we can finally know when Apple will be rolling out the new updates for its hardware. This includes iOS 14 for iPhones, watchOS 7 for the Apple Watch, iPadOS 14 for iPad, tvOS 14 for Apple TV, and macOS 11 Big Sur for Macs.

AirPods Studio, AirTags, Apple One

Details of other products have also popped up on the rumor mill and could also be introduced during tomorrow’s event. This includes the AirPods Studio over-ear headphones, the Tile-like trackers called AirTags and a new Apple One subscription bundle that will combine all of Apple’s services (Apple TV+, iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Arcade) into one subscription.

One more thing

Notably absent from the announcement is the next-generation iPhone. Sources have pointed out that the next-generation iPhone production encountered delays due to the pandemic, which is why it is likely that the new iPhone would be announced in October. October is the month where Apple usually announces new iPad Pros but considering that they have already been announced last March, next month’s iPhone announcement could be likely.

That being said, Apple can still announce the new iPhone tomorrow to keep with the September tradition. While we’ve gotten varying details on what it would look like, the new iPhone said to carry the LiDAR scanner from the iPad Pros (at least in the Pro versions).
