4 decades after it changed personal music listening habits, the latest incarnation of the Sony Walkman seems set for an IFA premiere! It all started with The Walkman Blog, which mentioned how a new Sony Walkman dubbed the NW-A100 has appeared on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website. While there was only only limited information on the new model, wi-fi 2.4/5.0Ghz, NFC and Bluetooth 5.0 are all listed.
The wi-fi factor means that apart from DSD, WAV and FLAC file playback for audiophiles, the Sony Walkman NW-A100 can also stream hi-quality music from the likes of Tidal and Qobuz. This, of course, would bring it into direct competition with devices like the new iPod Touch. Of course, there is a serious irony there, as the iPod and its vast scale adoption could well be blamed for making whole generations seemingly fine with thin, soulless MP3 renditions of their favorite music.
So IFA 2019 in a month, then.
