French tech company Blue Frog Robotics is in the process of bringing to domestic life a robot that is all things for all families. Buddy the Robot – as yet still in embryonic, prototype form – is soon to materialize and feature in the day-to-day of many households across the planet. The French company is on the mark for breathing life into the robot, having already achieved triple the target amount they’d set out for through crowdfunding site indiegogo.com.
Buddy the Robot, who is expected to start parading the corridors of our homes come 2016, is designed with the kids in mind. But more than just fun and games, he also doubles up as your trusty companion by monitoring your vicinity, while standing to attention as your staunch PA for timekeeping and appointment management.
Similar to what Siri would be like if transformed into a robot, Buddy will be able to break out into your favorite song on demand, remind you of urgent pending meetings, opt in awesome recipes and become a tool to skype with. S/he will also be a segue to all your social media as a live-in community manager.
Buddy is also friendly to the wallet, as the smiley robot will cost less than a laptop, or roughly what you’d dish out on a PS4. Two editions are being dreamed up: The Classic Edition, which will sell for $649, or the Developer Edition, selling at $749, which will enroll you in the Buddy Developer Program.
There’s no doubt that having a robot in the home will be an interesting addition to the family structure and dynamic. We’re just not so sure what kind of influence he might have on the kids, as there seems to be an added layer to that robotic smile. Yet another protagonist of the human laziness phenomenon, as smart technology and AI gives us less reason to think for ourselves.
But it’s comforting to know that companionship is now something that can be bought and sold in the form of a household robot. Or is it?
