We spoke with Richard Mikhael, President for Middle East & Africa, IDEMIA, on the solutions offered by the brand and its initiatives in pursuance and creation of safer cities.

Could you tell us a bit about IDEMIA, the story and how you began operations in the Middle East?

IDEMIA has been a technology partner to the UAE and GCC for decades. We have supported our customers to achieve safer roads and cities through a multitude of technological solutions. We see the GCC not only as an important growth region for our business, but also as a trend region when it comes to the pursuance and creation of safer cities.

You’re showcasing the MESTAfusion and MESTAcontrol technologies here at Gulf Traffic – could you tell us a bit more about how these work, and what was the process that brought about the development of these?

We are showing the new version our well-established MestaFusion with enhanced features for speed and red-light enforcement. In addition, we are also presenting the features of our road safety and Augmented Vision solutions, both of which are optimized for the concept of safe cities.

These two technologies are a complementary fit with the ambitions of the UAE and the wider GCC region as they progress towards becoming world-class cities where residents commute seamlessly and expect a peace of mind when they conduct their daily activities.

What would you believe to be the unique element that IDEMIA brings to the transportation industry?

IDEMIA has over 40 years’ experience in providing highly sophisticated road safety solutions to its international customers to make the journey of citizens safer and stress-free. IDEMIA offers a variety of traffic law enforcement solutions tailored for our clients’ needs. Our products are supported by an innovative backend software that can be integrated into existing law enforcement systems with ease.

What is your prediction for the next 2-3 years with regards to a digital transportation ecosystem?

Digitalization means that new or further developed sensor technologies support the acquisition of more data on all road users. We at IDEMIA see traffic management as a pillar towards the achievement of a safer city.

We believe in leveraging technology to ensure driver and commuter safety from the very get-go. This starts from being able to encourage safe driving habits with in-cabin enforcement technology that we offer, to increased capabilities of dedicated algorithms allow for much better analysis and projections on road user behavior. All these work in tandem to support our customers’ needs and goal of achieving smoother traffic and journeys.
