Also announces the HomePod Mini.
Apple’s online-only October keynote was short and sweet – giving us all the juicy details about their next line of devices. We must commend Apple’s production value here, which made us all wish everyone would follow how they do their virtual product launches.
The highlight of the keynote of course is the new iPhone 12, which comes in four models all supporting 5G connectivity. Also announced is the new HomePod Mini.
Measuring just 3.3 inches tall, the HomePod Mini packs enough technologies that make it smarter than any smart speaker. This tiny speaker can produce rich and detailed sound, thanks to a combination of the Apple S5 chip and software that analyses the sound and tune it for the best output.
It also acts as a hub for all your smart devices and can intelligently pair with additional HomePod Mini’s inside your house. What’s more, it features a new intercom system that lets you talk to other speakers and iOS devices – a somewhat advanced version of the walkie talkie that we first saw on the Apple Watch.
The HomePod Mini also uses Ultra Wideband technology which it uses to intelligently know if a device is close to it. For example, if your iPhone is close to the HomePod Mini, instant controls will appear that lets you control playback. It’s interesting how this concept will evolve in the future, given the popularity of smart devices.
The $99 HomePod Mini will initially be available in select countries, which unfortunately doesn’t include the UAE or the rest of the Middle East. Here’s hoping it officially comes to our region soon.
iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini
Powered by the new A14 Bionic chip, the 5G-powered iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini brings back the iconic design of the iPhone 4, with flat edges and aerospace-grade aluminum material. It comes in five new colors: blue, green, black, white, and Product RED.
A dual-camera setup is present, which includes a new 12-megapixel wide camera with f/1.6 aperture that offers 27 percent more light perfect for low light photo and a 12-megapixel ultra wide camera that now supports Night Mode as well.
Both devices come with the Super Retina XDR display and have an IP68 rating for water-resistance of up 6 meters up to 30 minutes. The iPhone 12 comes with a 6.1-inch display while the iPhone 12 mini will come with a 5.4-inch display. What’s more, the camera can also shoot videos in Dolby Vision, a first for any smartphone.
Other than the screen sizes, the feature set on both iPhones are the same, so you’re not missing out on any features.
iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
Targeting the power user and the pro user segment, the A14 Bionic-powered iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max retains the triple camera system introduced on the iPhone 11 Pro.
On the iPhone 12 Pro, there’s a 12-megapixel wide camera with f/1.6 aperture and seven-element lens, an ultra wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, and a 52mm focal length Telephoto camera. The iPhone 12 Pro Max brings a larger sensor on the wide camera for even better low light shot plus a 65mm focal length Telephoto camera. The cameras can also shoot videos in Dolby Vision.
The Pro lineup also gains the LiDAR Scanner first introduced on the iPad Pro earlier this year. It brings the ability to measure the light distance that can help deliver more realistic AR experiences and improvements in photography.
These iPhones also boast the new flat-edge design made from a surgical stainless steel band and is paired with a matte glass back. The front cover is coated with Ceramic Shield, making it tougher than any smartphone glass.
The OLED displays, also branded as Super Retina XDR, will offer the best way to view HDR content that can reach up to 1200 nits. The iPhone 12 Pro will have a 6.1-inch screen size, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max will have a 6.7-inch, the largest ever on an iPhone.
The entire iPhone 12 lineup will also come with MagSafe, which adds a magnet around the wireless charging coil that optimizes the alignment of accessories so it connects perfectly every time. Aside from the increased wireless charging speed of 15W, MagSafe will also be offered in different accessories like cases and wallets. Also expect a plethora of new third-party accessories that will support MagSafe.
