Today, the smartphone is the centrepiece of our lives, a crucial link that bridges our work productivity needs and captures personal moments, and an able ally for marathon gaming sessions.
There are many reasons why I feel that the OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G epitomizes what we all desire in the ultimate smartphone. This is a flagship smartphone which incredibly blends proprietary and industry-leading tech that helps meet every type of user’s power needs. From the massive processing power of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, 360° light-sensing and industry-leading heat dissipation technology, to advanced vibration waveforms for gaming professionals, it’s a bucket list of headlining tech.
However, such a feature list often comes with the caveat of draining battery life—which brings us to the 65W SuperVOOC 2 Flash Charging. OPPO takes charging very seriously and, way back in 2014, the company independently developed and introduced SuperVOOC Flash Charge technology to the smartphone world.
The OPPO Reno6 arrives with the SuperVOOC 65W charger. I plugged in the Reno 6 Pro 5G, which was 76% charged at the time.. The familiar SuperVOOC logo came on, and then the magic unfolds right in front of your eyes…77, 78, 79… a mere 6 minutes later, it was fully charged! It was quite a spectacle of sorts.
To put that into perspective, with 65W SuperVOOC 2.0m, the OPPO Reno6 Pro’s large 4500mAh battery reaches a 100% charge from zero in just 31 minutes.
Now, as with any fast charging mechanism [cue plugging any other brand’s smartphone into your laptop’s USB C charging cable], the result is an extremely overheated phone, a matter of no small concern.
Over a period of 2 weeks and multiple flash charging experiences, the OPPO Reno6 Pro never showed any signs of overheating, an indication of the level of thought that OPPO has put into SuperVOOC 2.0. While fast charging is the goal, safety is clearly a priority. The SuperVOOC 2.0 flash charging system has five layers of protection, with each node of the charging adapter, cable, mobile phone and battery housing its own protection chipset that monitors whether the voltage and current are within a safe and reasonable range at each node. VOOC Flash Charging also uses new materials such as Gallium Nitride (GaN) switches, embedded AI algorithms on OPPO’s proprietary Battery Safety Detection Chip, and new charging architectures.
For my test, I plugged in the SuperVOOC Charger, and conducted an intensive, multi-use session, alternating every 2 hours between Neir Reinacrnation and the Summoner War: Chronicles MMORG, switching to videos and tips while the game played in the background, with a few cursory looks at emails and Instagram Reelsin between. Then, I discovered one key difference between the OPPO Reno 6 Pro 5G and other flagships. Generally, charging most flagships while doing anything beyond very basic functions leads to an overheated phone, leading you to either unplug the charging cable or wait for a sufficient charge before starting your session. In the case of VOOC 2.0, OPPO has you covered. The key reason lies in how OPPO’s VOOC 2.0 Flash Charging tech balances speed and phone temperature. VOOC intelligently strikes a balance between optimal charging current and the subsequent temperature rise under different usage scenarios; the result is that you are able to use the phone while Flash Charging with no risk of overheating.
Another common concern that we have when it comes to fast charging is wearing out the battery on the long run. OPPO has that covered as well, since VOOC adjusts charging current based on the intelligent detection of different charging scenarios. This greatly reduces the risk of unpredictable battery ageing and, according to OPPO, the Reno6 Pro 5G will be able to maintain battery at 80% of its original capacity after as many as 1,500 fast-charge cycles.
I love how OPPO seems to have thought the SuperVOOC concept through. While it may not apply to us in the UAE, if you find yourself in a colder part of the world, OPPO’s SuperVOOC 2 Flash Charging is a lifesaver. Forcing a phone battery to charge in extreme temperatures poses serious safety concerns, even a risk of short-circuiting. OPPO’s ultra-low temperature charging solution uses smart algorithms to determine optimal charging temperature and increase it before charging begins. The SuperVOOC 2 Flash Charging tech enables the battery to increase in temperature from -20℃ to 10℃ in just tens of seconds, allowing it to charge as it normally would. Bravo!
Of course, as with all flagships in the Reno line, the OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G also comes with a whole set of options which enable you to manage battery power, and optimise battery life based on current usage. These include Super Power Saving Mode and Super Nighttime Standby, which ensure that battery life is extended when no apps are in usage.
