It looks like Face ID is here to stay.
Japan-based Macotakara has just shared details of what seems to be a dummy mockup of the upcoming iPhone 13 Pro that now comes with a redesigned notch. The mockup was likely based on leaked details about the next-generation iPhone, which was sourced from supply chains that are used by accessory makers.
The mockup showcases a slimmer notch at the top (26.8mm vs 34.83mm) with a repositioned front-facing camera. The notch also looks like it will no longer house the earpiece and will instead be moved at the top. While this design change isn’t confirmed, this will be the first time the notch on the Face ID-enabled iPhones that will undergo a major design change. The notch design has been similar since its introduction with the iPhone X’s debut in 2017.
Other than that, the mockup for the iPhone 13 matches the design of the iPhone 12 with most of the improvements taking place under the hood. That being said, even with Face ID already present, there’s a chance that Apple could bring back Touch ID either through an in-screen fingerprint sensor or through the side button similar to the 4th-Gen iPad Air released last year.
Apple is expected to announce the next-generation iPhone 13 this September.
