Xiaomi experimenting on a smartphone with a ‘liquid smartphone lens’
March 29, 2021

The lens can both act as a telephoto and macro lens.

Xiaomi always pioneers in interesting smartphone concepts, and while we’re still amazed at its recent wireless charging tech that can work from afar, the Chinese company has announced a new experimental liquid lens for its next flagship, the Xiaomi Mi Mix.

The Mi Mix devices combine experimental features that are unique to the brand. Previous efforts included an all-screen display, including a foldable one. While it wasn’t a big hit, it has still amassed fans and challenged other companies to actually experiment on new technologies that should hopefully be adopted by users in the future.

For the next version of the Mi Mix smartphone, the liquid lens technology will have the lens controlling the shape of the liquid spherical surface using a motor. Through this, it is able to do the right amount of focus needed to take the shot. There’s also “the characteristics of high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion and resistance to extreme environments,” which we’re still trying to understand, but it basically means that this particular lens can function as a macro and telephoto.

More details should be revealed as Xiaomi officially announces the Mi Mix this week, which has been confirmed to be powered by a Snapdragon 888 processor as well as a foldable display.
