Pebble was acquired by Fitbit last December.
Following the news that Fitbit is acquiring Pebble late last year came with the news and upcoming Pebble smartwatches initially announced will no longer be released and existing devices will be discontinued. Current market conditions and the release of other smartwatches impacted the sales and interest on the Pebble line.
Pebble’s Kickstarter story was one that managed to gain attention a few year back. It introduced a smartwatch that, while lacking vital features when compared to other smartwatches, a simple and unique experience for users who wanted a high-tech smartwatch who don’t like the extra bells and whistles.
While current Pebble users aren’t happy about the news, Pebble is rolling one last update that will make the smartwatch work indefinitely without relying on cloud services. In a blog post, the company said, “Today’s updates to the Pebble apps for iOS and Android liberate them from past dependency on cloud services.”
The first generation Pebble smartwatch was one of the first smartwatches I ever used was actually one of my favorites.
