The pirate was fined 50,000 AED.

An administrator of a website that hosted various illegal torrents of TV shows and movies was convicted by the Abu Dhabi court and was imprisoned for six months and was also ordered to pay a fine of 50,000 AED. The person will be deported after serving the sentence.

The website was brought in attention by OSN, who complained about the illegal torrents that can be downloaded from it.

Sophie Moloney, General Counsel of OSN, said in a statement, “The authorities have adopted extreme vigilance to all forms of television piracy which has resulted in websites streaming illegal content being blocked in the UAE. Stealing movies or television series is an offence, whether it is online or as DVDs from a shop, and the authorities recognise that the financial impact on the legitimate copyright owners will be the same.”

This should be a wakeup call for anyone distributing illegal content in the UAE. The TRA stressed that there are strict laws against copyright and trademark infringement, and punishments will be implemented if proven guilty.

Similar websites like The Pirate Bay have already faced prosecution.
