More power fit for new smartphones arriving later this year.
The Snapdragon 855 CPU already runs on some the current Android flagships like the OnePlus 7 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi 9, but just yesterday Qualcomm has revealed that a new updated version is being released in the second half of 2019.
The Snapdragon 855 Plus features an increased clock speed, reaching up to 2.96 GHz along with a new Adreno 640 GPU that they say can improve performance up to 15 percent. The updated chip is clearly meant for newer flagships, which should be perfect for gaming and graphics-intensive tasks like apps that utilize AR. The rest of the specifications are still similar to the 855, including support for 4G and 5G.
Qualcomm says that the upcoming Asus ROG Phone II will be one of the first devices to receive the new chipset, emphasizing its gaming phone potential.
“Snapdragon 855 Plus will raise the bar for elite gamers with the increase in CPU and GPU performance and elevate experiences for 5G, gaming, AI and XR, which is something our OEM customers look to us to deliver,” said Kedar Kondap, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Snapdragon 855 Plus is our most advanced mobile platform to date and will build upon the success of the 2019 Android flagship Snapdragon 855 5G mobile platform.”
Expect more smartphones to include the faster Snapdragon 855 Plus releasing before the end of the year.
