Saudi girl sends request for a ‘hijab’ emoji

September 19, 2016

It’s about representing everyone.

The recent changes on iOS 10 included various new emoji representing different races as a bid to diversify the emoji so that others can enjoy using it. But a Saudi schoolgirl in particular is hoping that the Hijab emoji will also be included in the next update.

Rayouf Alhumedhi, a 15-year-old student from Saudi Arabia contacted the Unicode Consortium, the committee responsible for the approval of emojis to be used on smartphones and other devices.

With this enormous number of people, not a single space on the keyboard is reserved for them, The woman in the headscarf would be a terrific addition to the mosque and Islam symbol emoji, as the hijab is one of the most globally recognized iconic representations of Islam,” she said in her proposal.

The move was supported by various users around the world, most especially from the Muslim community. Alexis Ohanian, Reddit co-founder, helped Alhumedhi in drafting and submitting the request to the Unicode Consortium.
