Skype Lite launches with data-saving features

February 23, 2017

Made for Indian users.

Specifically aimed for Indian users and offers a data-friendly experience, Skype Lite has been officially announced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and is currently available on Android device.

Skype Lite offers a lightweight interface that will enable it to run on older and/or entry-level devices along with a plethora of data-saving features that would help it consume the least data possible. Images for example, are compressed before being sent out and the same goes for other files. Even the app itself is only 13 MB in size.

It was also mentioned that the app consumes less power and will support seven local dialects in the country including Gujarati, Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

Skype Lite was made in partnership with the Microsoft India Development Center (IDC). While made intentionally for the Indian market, Microsoft is looking in to the possibility of expanding to other markets if Skype Lite proves to be successful.
