There’s more going on behind the scenes to give you recommended videos.
In just a span of a few months, TikTok has grown to be one of the largest social media platforms available. Millions of users around the world have started using the platform to share short-form videos. If you’ve noticed, one tab in TikTok is a ‘For You’ where you’ll get to see more videos apart from the creators you are following.
TikTok now explains that the For You page is based on a recommendation system so it can effectively give you videos that you are most likely to enjoy based on the ones you’ve seen. Also taken into consideration the user’s preferences when browsing including the interactions you’ve done with the post. Other elements such as captions, sounds, hashtags, account and country setting, and device type are all taken into consideration when recommending videos.
TikTok’s recommendation system also makes sure that you don’t get the same sound or videos from the same creator. The company says this is a way for them to bring different types of diverse content.
Safety is also another factor that is considered. If it finds content that shows graphic procedures for example, which in turn might be shocking for one user, TikTok automatically removes it from the For You page. Videos that have just been uploaded and are still under review along with spam content won’t be eligible for a recommendation.
TikTok says that their recommendation system is one continuous process that requires a lot of development and maintenance. The company also said that it has committed more resources for research and investment to build more protections that could affect the recommendation system.
