It is also one of the most-used apps in the Middle East.
Snapchat is undoubtedly one of the biggest social networks today and while there were a few bumps on its course, the app is now one of the most used messaging and social media apps in the world, including here in the Middle East.
Last year, Snapchat announced that it is rebuilding its Android app from the ground up after numerous customer complaints about the app being inferior to the iOS app. Snapchat’s iOS app always took advantage of the various hardware upgrades on the iPhone, but no so much on Android.
But things took a turn for the better, as Reuters reports that there are now more users of the Snapchat app on Android compared to iOS – a 22 per cent year-over-year increase in daily active users to be precise. That’s just on the first quarter of 2021, where there was a recorded 280 million users of the app, and 50 per cent of that was outside the US.
The updated Snapchat app for Android is faster and dramatically improves performance, including taking images and using the various AR-effects called Lenses. This simple solution meant that more users now enjoy using the app on an Android device, an experience that was once limited only to iPhone users.
“Snap embarked on rebuilding its Android app, which struggled with technical bugs, back in 2018. Snapchat’s Android user base now exceeds those on Apple iOS for the first time,” the company said in a statement. “As more people downloaded the new app outside the United States, where Android phones dominate over iPhones, Snap added support for more languages and added more media content geared toward audiences in certain countries.”
Snapchat is a free app available on iOS and Android devices.
