Mars colonies could be a reality
Steve Wozniak co-founded Apple in 1976, and has been one of the more prominent Silicon Valley figures over the years. Last year, he helped create the Silicon Valley Comic Con. While the event includes traditional Comic Con themes like comic book showcases, it also acts as a technology hub. The theme for this years Comic Con, which starts on the 21st of April, is “The Future of Humanity: Where Will We Be in 2075?”
And Steve Wozniak has a few ideas on how the world will be in 58 years time. And he is no stranger to the predictions game, having predicted 35 years back that portable laptops would emerge.
So what is the world he sees in 2075?
Well, certain things will remain the same in 58 years, according to The Woz, like Apple, Facebook and Google. According to him, “Apple will be around a long time, like IBM (which was founded in 1911). Look at Apple’s cash ($246.1 billion, as of the end of its last fiscal quarter). It can invest in anything. It would be ridiculous to not expect them to be around (in 2075). The same goes for Google and Facebook.”
He supports the idea of people looking at new regions for habitation, and sites deserts as being ideal locations for cities of the future, designed and built from scratch. There, housing problems will not exist and people will shuttle among domed structures. Special wearable suits will allow people to venture outside, he said.
One aspect he stresses is how artificial intelligence will be ubiquitous. We will all be interacting with smart walls and other surfaces to shop, communicate and be entertained. The impact will extend to medicine as well, as medical devices will enable self-diagnosis and doctor-free prescriptions.
Will Mars colonies be a reality? Wozniak definitely believes that to be the case, as he envisions an Earth zoned for residential use and Mars for heavy industry.
And lastly, and maybe sadly, we may not exactly be chit-chatting with aliens yet. Wozniak feels there is only a random chance that Earthlings will communicate with another race, saying that “It’s worth trying, but I don’t have high hopes.”
So that’s The Woz’s vision for 2075. Uploading to FB while waiting for our Blue Origin flight to Mars? Sounds good.
