Evidence suggests a new Apple TV with a 120Hz refresh rate.
It’s been years since the Apple TV got a refresh, and with the current Apple TV 4K sporting the same processor that came with the iPhone 7, users are eagerly waiting for when the hardware will come. That could sooner than they think, since evidence found on the beta code of tvOS 14.5 could mean the new Apple TV is launching soon, and with some pretty nifty features.
Various references to ‘120Hz’ have found on the beta code, which could only mean that the new Apple TV could bring a higher 120Hz refresh similar to what gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S offers. This could also mean that the HDMI port on the new Apple TV is getting upgraded to HDMI 2.1 to support this new feature.
120Hz doesn’t just mean smoother transitions and animations on the menu, but will also support games that can now run at a higher refresh rate. That being said, you will still need a compatible display to be able to enjoy these features. The current Apple TV 4K maxes out at 60Hz.
Introducing 120Hz support on the new Apple TV could also be interpreted as a way for the company to push Apple Arcade to more consumers. Apple Arcade, a subscription-based service that lets you play hundreds of AAA games, recently got updated with more than 30 new games added to the lineup.
