OLED iPads are coming – but not this year

March 9, 2021

MacBooks are also scheduled to get a display upgrade.

Digitimes has reported that next year’s iPads and MacBooks will finally come with an OLED display. This will mark the first time an OLED screen will be used on Apple’s line of notebooks and tablets. It was noted that the 10.9-inch iPad Air will be getting the OLED screen first, followed by the 12.9-inch iPad Pro as well as the 16- and 17-inch MacBook Pro.

This news follows after Apple is rumored to introduce mini-LED displays on the new iPad Pros, which are rumored to be announced later this month. The new iPad Pros could also feature an improved A14 chip that should match the performance of the M1 silicon found on the new Macs.

The upgrade in display technology is something new in the pipeline. After all, since the iPad’s introduction in 2010, it has only used LCD displays and the shift to OLED might mean a better user experience. OLED screens use self-lighting pixels and typically offer improved contrast and brightness especially when viewing the content in HDR.
