The Red Magic 5G becomes official with crazy 144Hz display
March 15, 2020

What are you gonna use that display for?

Nubia isn’t quite known in the smartphone market, but the company has caught our attention with its new flagship smartphone. The Red Magic 5G may look like any other flagship device, but it is actually one of the first smartphones to feature a 144Hz display.

High refresh rates for smartphones is fast becoming a standard, with 90Hz and 120Hz screens making the rounds on devices like the OnePlus 7T and the Oppo Find X2. Red Magic 5G’s 144Hz though is the highest refresh rate we’ve seen so far.

Let’s look at the rest of the hardware: the Red Magic 5G has a 6.65-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate along with a 240Hz touch sampling rate. Expect buttery smooth usage on the smartphone combined with improved screen detection.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 865 CPU plus your choice of 8GB, 12GB of 16GB of and 128GB or 256GB of storage. The storage also uses UFS 3.0 for a faster experience. There’s a decent 4,500 mAh battery, though we want to know how it will perform with the 144Hz refresh rate.

At the back of the Red Magic 5G, you will find a triple camera setup with a 64MP main sensor, 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP macro lens. There’s also a fingerprint sensor located at the back along with RGB lighting effects and shoulder buttons for gaming. The Android 10-powered device also has a physical headphone jack.

The Red Magic 5G is expected to arrive next week in China starting at $540 (1,900 AED).
