Goodbye to the 3.5 mm audio port.
One of the rumors pointing to the upcoming iPhone 7 is the removal of the 3.5 mm audio jack. The port has been a staple part of any smartphone ever since its inception. While equally powerful headsets have been available, the 3.5 mm port is still considered an analogue connection, which may point to some manufacturers considering replacing it with something ‘modern’.
In the case of the iPhone, the Lightning port is one of those possibilities. Additionally, the removal of the 3.5 mm port means that Apple can also make the smartphone even thinner than what it already is.
True to this claim, a video has surfaced online showcasing what the upcoming Earpods might look like with a Lightning connector. We can’t claim if the clip is genuine, though it gives you an idea how the connector will work. That being said, if ever the rumors are true, that would mean most headphones will no longer be compatible with the iPhone unless an adapter is used.
There’s always the wireless option – though that would mean it will also conflict with other devices that connect to it wirelessly – like using an Apple Watch for example.
