Emirates Mars Mission officially announced.

Details of the new Mars project spearheaded by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has finally been unveiled in an event yesterday. This marks the first Arab mission to space and will see the mission go for a two-year orbit in Mars.

Al Amal – the name of the rocket which means ‘Hope’ – will come in a size of a small car and will take about 7 – 9 months for the journey from Earth to Mars, the mission will take advantage of an interplanetary alignment between Earth and Mars to shorten the trip, which is due to happen in 2020.

“The Emirates Mars Mission is an investment in our human capital and an investment in our human capital is a winning investment. Future generations will reap the rewards of our investment in science and knowledge,” Sheikh Mohammed said during the unveiling.

The entire mission will be composed of all UAE nationals – this includes 75 engineers which they hope to increase to 150 by the year 2020. All the data that will be gathered will be shared with various institutions worldwide.
