Soft launch has started rolling out in the Philippines.
Twitter has just announced that a ‘Lite’ version of its Android app that would have a relatively low footprint. This includes a small data consumption and compatibility even with low-end Android devices.
Starting with a soft launch in the Philippines, Twitter Lite was designed for users that do not have a steady and reliable internet connection. The app itself is only 3 MB in size which can be easily installed on any Android smartphone.
Twitter Lite is also designed to work on 2G and 3G networks and will include a Data Saver mode to make it faster and more responsive. This means though that certain features like images, videos and GIF won’t automatically load.
You only need an Android smartphone running on at least Lollipop which shouldn’t be a problem since it is already on about 80 percent of the total Android devices.
No word yet as to when it will expand to other territories as the soft launch is still considered an experiment. But it is likely to follow the footsteps of Facebook’s Lite version of its apps which is already available in most emerging markets.
