Nol card is the primary means of payment on all public transport in Dubai.
The Dubai-based Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has just announced a new virtual Nol card during GITEX 2019. This new solution will enable the users of all public transport services in Dubai to use their smartphones a save a virtual Nol card.
This virtual Nol card will use the smartphone’s NFC so it can read and deduct money from the virtual card. “We are keen to familiarize the public with this initiative for buying the virtual Nol card and saving it in their mobile phones where they can top-up the card directly from their credit cards, which are saved in their phones. The NFC feature has to be enabled in smartphones of riders such that they can use the virtual Nol card in paying fares for metro, bus, tram, and marine transport services,” said Mohammed Al Khayat, Director of Automated Fare Collection at RTA’s Corporate Technology Support Services Sector.
RTA said that it is planning to roll out the virtual Nol card in the third quarter of next year, just in time for the Expo 2020 celebrations.
RTA already has supported Nol cards embedded on SIM cards so you can use your smartphone to use RTA’s public transport services. This new virtual Nol card means you no longer have to purchase a physical card and simply use your smartphone to travel around the emirate. Just make sure you don’t run out of battery.
