France has just made lightsaber dueling a real sport
February 20, 2019

The sport has been formally recognized by the French Facing Federation.

Star Wars fans have something to be excited about: lightsaber dueling – yes, the one where Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader battle it out on the fictional sci-fi world. Lightsaber dueling has just now been officially recognized by the French Fencing Federation as an official sport where they will provide training and even battles for young Jedis (or Sith Lords).

It was said that the move was done to keep kids off phones and engage them in more physical activity – and we couldn’t agree more. It won’t be real laser swords of course, but the replicas used will be neon colored that gives off that lightsaber glow that you’re familiar with.

This has attracted not just kids but also adults, especially fans of the popular franchise. A tournament that took place earlier this month had 34 participants and was done inside a dimly lit hall so that the lightsabers’ colors stand out.

But how will you gain points for dueling? It was mentioned that you get points when you get strikes on different parts of your body. A strike on the hand would only gain one point, but a strike on the head can get you five points. The first to get fifteen points wins that round.

And yes, there’s also a ‘sudden death’ round.

So, Star Wars fans, yay or nay? Tell us what you think in the comments below!
